Workshop with Cynthia Bradford!

Please come join us for our Spring workshop with Cynthia Bradford.

DATE:  April 20, 2013
PLACE:  Mountainview Elementary, Morgantown, WV
TIME:  9:00 – 1:00 PM

SESSION DESCRIPTION:  Connecting the Dots
We’ll take an in-depth look at three aspects of teaching music:  expressive writing which leads to expressive singing; making connections in the choral classroom; and assessing students progress.  By connecting these “dots” we’ll hope to see the whole picture of a well-balanced young musician.

More complete description below.

Expressive Singing and Descriptive Writing
This session supports the hope that students can communicate about music and through music. As music teachers are being asked to incorporate subjects outside of the music into their lesson plans, the 6+1 Traits of Writing  and the Common Core Standards will be explored and “translated” into musical vocabulary and song materials for the elementary classroom.  Songs and stories, along with samples of student writing, will be shared.

Connecting the Music Class to the Choral Ensemble (and back again)
This portion of the day will demonstrate ways to introduce concepts in the music classroom and “morph” them into the choir ensemble.  The choral ensemble, in turn, can serve as a catalyst for enhanced learning of basic solfege and rhythmic skills back to the music class. Choral octavos and lesson plan ideas for grades 2 – 6 will be provided.

On Target:  Assessment Techniques
Tried and true techniques for assessing singing and playing will be demonstrated.  Shall we discuss assessment AND evaluation (giving grades!??!!)
