Workshop with Cynthia Bradford!

Please come join us for our Spring workshop with Cynthia Bradford.

DATE:  April 20, 2013
PLACE:  Mountainview Elementary, Morgantown, WV
TIME:  9:00 – 1:00 PM

SESSION DESCRIPTION:  Connecting the Dots
We’ll take an in-depth look at three aspects of teaching music:  expressive writing which leads to expressive singing; making connections in the choral classroom; and assessing students progress.  By connecting these “dots” we’ll hope to see the whole picture of a well-balanced young musician.

More complete description below.

Expressive Singing and Descriptive Writing
This session supports the hope that students can communicate about music and through music. As music teachers are being asked to incorporate subjects outside of the music into their lesson plans, the 6+1 Traits of Writing  and the Common Core Standards will be explored and “translated” into musical vocabulary and song materials for the elementary classroom.  Songs and stories, along with samples of student writing, will be shared.

Connecting the Music Class to the Choral Ensemble (and back again)
This portion of the day will demonstrate ways to introduce concepts in the music classroom and “morph” them into the choir ensemble.  The choral ensemble, in turn, can serve as a catalyst for enhanced learning of basic solfege and rhythmic skills back to the music class. Choral octavos and lesson plan ideas for grades 2 – 6 will be provided.

On Target:  Assessment Techniques
Tried and true techniques for assessing singing and playing will be demonstrated.  Shall we discuss assessment AND evaluation (giving grades!??!!)

CLINICIAN INFORMATION:

Biographical Description:
Cynthia Bayt Bradford specializes in music for middle and elementary students and has earned acclaim for her artistic achievement and engaging rapport with young singers. Cynthia is a frequent clinician and conductor for honor and festival choirs throughout the country.  She is a graduate of Luther College and Indiana University where she also earned certification in the Kodály philosophy of music education.  She is the Founder and Artistic Director Emerita of the Southlake Children’s Choir, a regional community choir in Northwest Indiana.

As music specialist for the Crown Point Community School Corporation, sharing musical ideas and teaching strategies with colleagues is one of Cynthia’s favorite aspects of being a music educator.  She has presented sessions on choral repertoire, standards-based curriculum development, and arts assessment methods at national, regional, and state levels, including the Organization of American Kodály Educators, the American Choral Directors Association, and the Music Educators National Conference. Cynthia served as a music consultant for the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (SCASS) in Washington, DC, and was a leader in the collaboration in assessment training for the partnership formed by the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana Music Educators Association, and the Art Education Association of Indiana.  Her articles on choral curriculum development and assessment practices have been published in the OAKE Envoy and the ACDA Choral Journal. From Our Mountain to Yours

Presentation by Annie and Glen Chilcote

The Chilcotes teach elementary general music in Montgomery County Public Schools in beautiful southwestern Virginia. Annie has been a traveling teacher in the county with a unique schedule and various classroom settings at several different schools, causing her to be very flexible! Glen teaches at Kipps Elementary School in Blacksburg, VA. He leads four extra-curricular instrumental groups, including a recorder club, a drum club, and two Orff Ensembles. Annie and Glen both serve as officers with the Virginia Highlands chapter of AOSA and are WVU graduates!

Description: The focus of the workshop is lessons that reach a wide variety of learning styles, since Annie and Glen teach such an array of abilities. In addition to that, they will be sharing some tried and true lessons and a little jazz. There will be a movement focus for some portions of the workshop, so comfortable clothes are encouraged!
