Examining the Orff-Schulwerk volumes and original writings,workshop participants will construct ideas about the Orff-Schulwerk process and modern philosophies and issues of education.

Brian D. Crisp is a full time educational consultant and founder of Crisp Consulting + Coaching. Brian holds degrees in English and music from Wake Forest University, Furman and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. His master certificate in Orff-Schulwerk is from the University of St. Thomas. He has worked in public and private schools as a teacher and administrator in several states. In addition to being the course director of Orff-Schulwerk training at Webster University, Brian teaches the University of Kentucky Orff-Schulwerk Course. Besides a strong background in Orff-Schulwerk, in 2003 Brian was a fellow in the Municipal School of Reggio Emilia, Italy.

We've been doing some "Spring Cleaning" of our MLAOSA to-do list! We'd like you to take a look and see if you are able to help us out!

The National AOSA Conference will be held in Pittsburgh this year! This is a GREAT opportunity for you to attend some amazing workshops, network with some local connections for jobs, training, etc. and really have an awesome time!

Because the conference is so close, and hosted by one of our sister chapters (PGTAOSA), we've been asked to supply a couple things to support their efforts. Hosting the conference is a very expensive endeavor for a chapter and any support is greatly appreciated.

The theme is "Neighbors in Harmony". We've been asked to design a basket to be raffled off to raise money for AOSA. The basket should be "WV Themed". Here are some ideas we thought of. Please let us know if you can donate/purchase any of these things to put in the basket, or if you have any other ideas to add. We will also be accepting monetary donations in order to create the basket and items to be sold at the "AOSA Boutique" during the conference. If you would like to bring a few dollars to donate, we will take a collection at our next workshop on April 16th.

1. Take Me Home, Country Roads....a children's story book
2. Any WV Children's Author themed book.
3. Any Appalachian Recordings/collections of folk songs
4. WVU t-shirt, sports bottle, or any cool little WVU themed item.
5. A small hand-made item: quilt, scarf, blanket, etc...
6. A local recipe book
7. Any small food item that can be transported on a plane or eaten while at conference. (ie. pepperoni rolls)
8. Any WV themed Lesson plans.
9. Note cards/photos with images of WV

*Keep in mind, our basket needs to be carried on a plane, so we are limited in size.

Also, a word of advice from the local chapter If you are a student or teacher, and would like to attend the conference in November, it is ALOT cheaper if you are a member of the National Organization. Simply go to the web site for AOSA (see our list of links to the right), and you can join and register there. (students, THERE IS A DISCOUNT FOR YOU) You will also receive quarterly mailings including the Orff Echo, filled with lots of lesson ideas and articles and unlimited access to the full web site of information included.

Finally, we had the first "craft making" session to supply items for the boutique. We will be having another one soon. If you are crafty, like using a hot glue gun, or are a whiz at cutting, gluing, laminating, etc....please come to our next craft session!! Food is provided along with many great classroom ideas and lesson plan brainstorming! We will be posting information on the details soon!!

Martina Vasil holds a Bachelor of Music Education from West Virginia University and a Masters of Music from the Eastman School of Music. She has taught general music to students in grades kindergarten through 8^th and band to grades 4 through 8. Currently she teaches general music at the Propel Charter School in Homestead, Pennsylvania. She has completed Orff-Schulwerk Levels I, II and III at Eastman and she is Level I Certified in World Music Drumming.
This workshop will consist of an artillery of activities that gets students K-8 up and moving.

Classroom tested, these are activities that students are sure to love!

Schulwerk "Spring"boards!

Explore the multiple springboards used to dive into a Schulwerk lesson. We will explore multiple starting points for a Schulwerk based lesson, starting with movement to process pieces,or objects as inspiration. Volumes material to folk songs, tools for students’ improvisations and more! We will sing, speak, move and play our way,through an exciting workshop day! Lessons are geared for students in grades K-5.

BethAnn teaches children in grades 4-6 in Streetsboro, Ohio. She is the former General Music chair for OMEA, and a past member of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association's National Board of Trustees. She teaches Orff Schulwerk courses at Villanova University, Trinity University, and music training courses in Suzhou, and Jinin, China.

It’s Elementaria: From Exploration to Composition
After developing Orff-Schulwerk with Gunild Keetman, Carl Orff reflected upon the elemental musical style identified with the Gunterschule and Musik fur Kinder. At the 1963 opening of the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Orff commented on elemental music:

Elemental music is pertaining to the elements, primeval, rudimentary, treating of first principles. It is never music alone but forms a unity with movement, dance, and speech. It is music one makes oneself, in which one takes part not as listener, but as a participant. It is unsophisticated, employs no big forms ad no big architectural structures, and it uses small sequence forms, ostinato and rondo. Elemental music is near the earth, natural, physical, within the range of everyone to learn it and experience it, and suitable for the child (Carl Orff, 1963).

From these simple ideas, Gunild Keetman created elegant melodies and simple,yet, exquisite forms. Coupling her lesser known pieces from the original GermanMusik fur Kinder Volumes and other source works with her pedagogical ideasfound in Elementaria, we will explore practical and thoughtful models forstudent compositions. This workshop will integrate singing, playing, speakingand dancing into well processed lessons that foster joyful learning andcritical thinking.

Brian Crisp, Adjunct Professor and Orff-Schulwerk coordinator. Brian Crisp is the Head of Madison School of the Arts in Madison WI. Brian is a native of North Carolina and holds degrees in English and music from Wake Forest University, Furman and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. His master certificate in Orff-Schulwerk is from the University of St. Thomas. He has worked in public and private schools in North Carolina and Kentucky as well as Minnesota, where he was one of the founding members of Schulfunk, an adult Orff-Schulwerk based performance group. In addition to being the course director of Orff-Schulwerk Teacher Training at Webster University, Brian teaches the University of Kentucky Orff-Schulwerk Course. Besides a strong background in Orff-Schulwerk, Brian also has studied the Reggio Emilia approach in the Infant-Toddler Centers and Preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Brian presents workshops and conference sessions throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. He recently published an article with his colleague, Dr. Louise Cadwell, titled "Weaving the Theories: Orff-Schulwerk and the Reggio Approach." Brian is the educational consultant for MMB Music, the US distributor of Studio 49 instruments.

Jennifer Connoley (Co-President, MLAOSA) went to the conference in Charlotte and had a great time! If you have never been to a national conference, definitely plan to go to one! It's a terrific place to meet up with other Orff teachers, see old friends and make new connections. You will meet clinicians who are icons in AOSA and you will gain valuable insight into your teaching!

We ended another successful year of summer music camp. We had a great turnout about 65 students from the upper elementary and early middle school grades. The students worked hard and had lots of fun meeting students from other schools in the area. Thanks to all the parents who allowed their children to participate.

Our theme this year was Earth, Air, Water and Fire.

Come and Play the Orff Schulwerk Way!

Presented by Julie Scott

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn pieces for singing, unpitched percussion, and Orff instruments. Materials will include pieces by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman and original folk song settings. The activities will be presented in sequential order of difficulty for children in grades K-6. The pieces presented will also include singing games and dances. Come prepared to join in the fun!

Julie Scott is Coordinator of Elementary Music for Richardson, Texas ISD, and is pursuing a Ph.D. at Eastman School of Music. She currently serves as Vice President of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. Julie taught elementary music in Texas schools for 17 years, was Assistant Professor of Music Education at Eastman for one year, and taught elementary music methods at Southern Methodist University for three years. She continues her work at SMU as Coordinator of Summer Music Educators Workshops, and also is Director of the Center for Contemporary Studies in music at University of North Texas. She has taught Orff Levels Training Courses to adults at five state MEAs, school districts and Orff chapters throughout the US. Julie has presented sessions internationally at conferences in Thailand and in Australia.

For many years, Julie has been a director of children's choirs, most recently as director of the Lewisville ISD 5th Grade Honor Choir, which was one of the two featured elementary choirs a the Texas Music Educators Conference in 2004. Previously, she served as the children's choir director at First United Methodist Church, Dallas, and as director of the Mesquite All-City Girls Choir. Her choirs have been featured on two recordings for Choristers Guild, and she is the author of the Early Childhood Year 3 Stepping Stones children's choir curriculum, which is published by Choristers Guild.

Thank you to everyone who attended our chapter sharing session this past Saturday at Mountain View Elementary in Morgantown, WV. We had a nice turnout. Thank you to all the presenters, you all did a wonderful job. And thank you to those who brought in lessons to share. It's always good to have fresh lessons to use.

Sorry, I forgot my camera, so I have no pictures to share, but I will remember for next time! Look forward to seeing everyone again in April!

From the North:
Take I-79 South toward Morgantown;

Take the I-68 exit (last Morgantown Exit. It is well marked).

Once on I-68, take Exit 1 toward Morgantown; follow Route 119 North to Greenbag Road (a left off the exit ramp).

Turn right on Greenbag Road. School is approximately 2 miles on the left. You will go through 2 traffic lights.

From the South:
Take I-79 North toward Morgantown

Take the I-68 exit (It is well marked).
